The Observer:

(After two different unbagged two-liters of Diet Coke had rolled off the bottom tier of the grocery cart and had been put into the seat with him): “Dad’s Diet Coke is going to be fizzier than he expects.”

The Negotiator:

(While a favorite song is playing in the car): “Can we listen to this one again?”

Me: “I don’t know. Maybe.”

Him: …

Him (while song is at about the middle): “Can you start it over from the beginning?”

Me: “Not now. Wait till it’s over.”

Him: “Thanks!”

The Seeker:

Him: “I can’t find the TiVo remote.”

His dad: “Did you look under these blankets here? That’s the first place I would look.”

Him (after search reveals no remote under blankets): “Where’s the second place you would look?”

Hmm (a la Colonel Casey)

NBC announced its fall schedule this morning, without Chuck, but not because it’s cancelled–the final decision is delayed until May 19.

So … what do they have left to decide, given that there are no more episodes this season by which to gauge ratings? Are they seeing how many Subway footlongs we can buy between now and then?

If that’s what it took, I’d buy a footlong weekly as long as the show was on the air. Sure. But that being the case, why don’t we just go ahead and admit that with the coming of DVRs, TV has moved past the advertising model and should just go to a pay model? Most of us are paying for our channels as it is. Under a new model, you could pay for only the channels you want, or even better, pay for the shows you want–and if subscriptions to a particular show aren’t high enough, then it’s cancelled. This would be far more concrete than ratings, which don’t really measure in real numbers how big a particular show’s audience is. And if your subscription drops off, you have hard numbers on that end too and thus undeniable justification for cancellation.

Down side: Not much wiggle room to try to improve the show if your subscribers drop off–because if they’ve dropped off, they won’t see the improvement and thus be enticed to come back. Other drawbacks I’m missing? Aside from the mechanics of making your box show only the shows you subscribe to rather than a series of channels?

How d’ya Like Your Commander-In-Chief, Boys?

How’d you like to be that fighter jock who buzzed his F-16 over Manhattan today?

How’d you like to be the pilot of that AF-1?

How do you like knowing that the NOTUS calls your shots?

How do you like your Commander-In-Chief? I feel for you, I really do. Sign up to protect America and spend your afternoon recreating New York’s worst nightmare. For a photo op.

Sleep tight, Caldera. Heckuva job, you colossally self-important airhead.

Another Movie About a Another Kick-Butt Blonde That Should Not Be Made

Sarah Michelle Gellar in talks for a Buffy movie?

In talks with whom? No mention of Joss Whedon in that article. What if they get her to commit but not, say, Alyson Hannigan or David Boreanaz? The loss of either of them, or Nicholas Brendan, James Marsters, or Anthony Head, would instantly start the movie off at a huge disadvantage.

Will the story take into account the stupid-sounding personal twists of the Buffy “Season 8” comics, or will it pick up threads left behind by the actual Season 7? Which was also kind of dumb–slayers all over the world, in case you’ve forgotten.

Most shudder-making of all, would a movie do what’s mentioned in that link–make Buffy a mother? Lest Joss forget how much we hated it when his team provided Buffy with the most annoying little sister in the history of television, a child thrown into the demon mix would be worse than Dawn Summers, even, which is saying something.

Very. Bad. Idea.

Revisiting the Castle

Four episodes in, I’m feeling a little better about the future of Castle, though the primary problem, the lack of chemistry between Castle and Beckett (real cute on her name, too, guys, although the symbolism could have been better), is not solved. The core problem with Beckett’s character, which leads to the chemistry problem, is that she is inconsistent. She’s hot, and knows it (“You have no idea” from the first episode and this week’s “distract him with legs” stunt) yet won’t give him the time of day while at the same time bemoaning her lack of action as though she’s a shut-in nerd. What possible real-life woman does this resemble? A woman with the confidence to show up in a thigh-length hot-pink number and drop her coat does not bewail her lack of dates to the M.E. in the morgue. This is partly a writer problem, but also an actor problem–she is high-strung, unlike, say, Dani Reese of Life who plays hard as nails, cool as ice, and faintly nose-wrinkling over Crews while allowing her respect for him to depend on his work, not on his quirks. Which part of the woman are we supposed to buy into here? I actually could buy the shut-in nerd kind of a thing, since she reads all Castle’s books, kind of an Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy (she was also high strung), but that negates the “I’m hot and I know it” act that Sarah Shahi does so easily for Dani Reese.

It’s frustrating, because otherwise I would not have dreamed there was an actress working with whom Nathan Fillion couldn’t produce chemistry. Come on, writers, come on, Katic, decide on the character’s primary motivation here. Isn’t that the first thing they teach you in drama school?

Enough of the negative–the show is mostly flowing a lot more smoothly, the character of Castle’s mother is fitting in better, the daughter’s delightful although too unbelievably perfect–as is Castle himself. Does he have no flaws that can’t be overcome by looking cute? But I am enjoying the show quite a bit and hope it continues finding its feet quickly.

For Smart People, You’re Awfully Damn Dumb

Auto execs who flew their corporate jets to DC to shill for taxpayer money for stockholder corporations? Dumb. Bankers and financial gurus who insisted certain businesses were too big to be allowed to fail? Dumb.

You shilled for all that taxpayer money and honestly didn’t believe it would have government filaments unbreakably attached to every single dollar? Really? You didn’t consider the possibility of Obama handing you your marching orders every day from now on? Really?

God, are you dumb.

I’d rather be the one to be telling you what to do, since it’s my money, but hey, it’s some untraceably small percentage, so my elected representatives whom I didn’t vote for get to tell you what to do instead. Isn’t it fun to get barrels of money from an apparently limitless well?

God, are you dumb. Our country’s economy may die, and if it does, your hands were on the stake through its heart.

Buy Honda. And Toyota and Nissan. And Hyundai. And Mercedes and BMW and Volvo and Volkswagen. Drive the government out of the car business. And hoard your cash and drive them out of the banking and financial services business, too. Out.

He Did It All for Charity?

Am I the only one who finds this a bit self-indulgent?

A guy rowed across the Atlantic–successfully–to support cancer research. He hoped to raise $500,000. He’s raised $100,000. But:

He and his sister spent $60,000 of their own savings to have his boat custom built, and he took a leave of absence from his financial services job.

Seems to me if he’d donated the $60,000 plus a percentage of the salary lost during his leave of absence, he could have done as much good as he’s done so far without all the soreness, exposure, and freeze-dried food. But then he wouldn’t have a custom-built boat and the honor of being the third American to row the Atlantic.

Or maybe I’m just a grinch. I guess he could’ve just bought the boat.

Via Instapundit.

Also, maybe I didn’t emphasize this enough–he’s raised $100,000, or only 20 percent of his goal. Which makes him utterly unlike the Canadian mentioned by Janie in the comments, who ran across Canada–a place known to contain people to ask for $1, unlike the Atlantic Ocean–and raised over $24 million even though he was ultimately unsuccessful at running coast to coast due to his own cancer, which took his life soon after. Raise your hand if you believe CNN would have covered this had something happened to prevent Paul Ridley from rowing the whole way across the Atlantic. So, yes, his success at completing the journey has drawn attention and will probably draw funds, but two points: 1) He clearly focused more on buying the boat and getting it and himself ready than on raising funds, and 2) If he had been unsuccessful, he’d still have the boat and the attempt, but probably not nearly as many funds. He took a rather large risk of blowing the whole venture and completely stalling out at $100,000.

I’ll wait and see where his funds totals end up, but I think the comparison with Terry Fox is strained at best.

No Veronica Mars Movie for Now

I can’t really say I’m crying much about this. Veronica was always a merry-go-round between in-love-and-kinda-tortured and on-the-outs-and-kinda-tortured but always utterly self-possessed, and that’s how the series ended: Veronica standing alone and us waiting to see what round she would take on the chin next. A movie would do …. what? Serenity cleared up one large Firefly plot device (Reavers) with aplomb, but also, oh yeah, killed not one but two major characters while it was at it, because Joss is something of a sadistic mofo when he wants to be and hey! life never changes on a dime and if actors say they’re not going to do any more Firefly movies, well then, by gad, kill their characters quick because they’ll never change their minds.

Okay, maybe I have a small issue with movies meant to wrap up TV shows. But in the case of Veronica Mars, what is there left to wrap up? There will be a mystery, and there will be the side-issue of Veronica’s love story. Will they bring back Duncan in yet another improbable twist–reconciliation, with his kidnapping of his daughter and his commissioning of the murder of Aaron Echolls hanging over him? They lose all the Logan-Veronica shippers that way. Will it be a happy ending for Logan and Veronica instead? Unlikely, given Rob Thomas’s preference for keeping them on-again, off-again. So what’s left? The mystery. Rob Thomas had one awesome idea, the solution to question of Lily’s murderer in season one, and he played it out masterfully over the course of the full season. The other two seasons, not so much with the awesome ideas. What’s left to do? Veronica ended on a noir-ish note of standing alone with things going wrong, but with the idea that Veronica would pull through as she always does.

At this point I just don’t think there’s much more to say of her than that.

Paper. Can you believe these Star Wars models are made of paper? You can download the instructions and make your own. In my next life, maybe, where there will be twin suns and more hours in the day and more days in the year. Wow.

Beware, some these models are somewhat difficult to build.

You don’t say!

“Of Course I Am”

Is there anything cuter than David Boreanaz, except of course for Nathan Fillion?

(Aside: Joss kind of has a type, doesn’t he?)

(Aside: I feel so sorry for Rachael with her voice problem. I hope her doctors and therapists are able to sort her out. Judging by the sound of her voice on the above video, they are still postponing surgery.)
