Valentine’s Day Quote to Live By

Tonight’s episode of House: Foreman reads Cameron a scathing rundown on how her previous, short-lived marriage to a previous, short-lived husband wasn’t really commitment because she knew he was dying going in. Then the money quote:

“Cameron. I wasn’t criticizing you. People who avoid commitment are people who know what a big thing it is.”

  1. Yikes! remind me not to check your blog for romantic inspiration on V-day in the future! Are you insinuating those who do not avoid commitment do not know what a big thing it is?

  2. Nope. Just that reluctance to commit could also be a sign of prudence rather than just the irrational fear it’s often painted as.

  4. Too tight-leather-pantsy. From the “Wild Bunch”: “When you side with a man, you stick with him. Otherwise, you’re some kind of animal”.

Yeah, but that’s assuming you’ve already sided with him. I’m not talking about deserting a commitment, I’m talking about forming one to begin with. Proceeding with caution is no bad thing.

    Also–“tight-leather-pantsy”???

My name for hedonist stolen from Dafydd ab Hugh. I don’t know that we disagree very much about your main point except … maybe we should not go “all the way” unless we are ready to commit? I am a guy, BTW.

  7. Uh, who’s talking about sex? I’m saying it’s wise to be cautious before entering a long-term commitment and that it’s sometimes wisdom and not irrational fear. End of my point.

  8. I’m committed to try to survive my new job and finish my college degree. Beyond that, I make no promises. :-)

Tonight at work two high school boys came in to shop right before we closed. Conversion (the ratio of store traffic to # of sales that they force us to calculate every two hours) was tanking, so I showed them some products men can use in hopes that they’d buy. They muttered something about shopping for girlfriends, so I showed them some clearanced Valentine’s stuff. They asked what kinds of stuff my boyfriend liked, and I replied that I didn’t have one to speak of. The fourteen-year-old with zits looked genuinely surprised and concerned, and said that was too bad. Then he brightened and told me he could get me a boyfriend. I did not commit to taking him up on that offer. I think it’s safe to say you’ve hit a low point when a teenager offers to hook you up.
