And When Did You Last Sing the Songs of Satan?

Rules for Methodist hymnody.

IV. Sing lustily and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of your voice now, nor more ashamed of its being heard, than when you sung the songs of Satan.

Ever wondered about the difference between Methodists and Wesleyans, given that both follow the teachings of John “Songs of Satan” Wesley? So have I. Apparently the Wesleyans broke from the Methodists over slavery.

  1. The last time I sang the Songs of Satan was probably right before breakfast this morning. Oh yes, I sang lustily.

No doubt, but not relevant to the OP. It is interesting how Protestant denominations fracture, and over which issues. I don’t know enough the split of the Wesleyans from the Methodists to comment.

If the issue was slavery, then it would seem the time is long since past for a reunion, but like the Civil War perhaps there were underlying issues that still exist ?

  3. Allen’s not a troll or at all off-topic. He’s just being funny. :)

As for the split, ever known any group, once they get split off and set up a power structure of their own, to return to the fold if they don’t have to?

  4. Hi Anwyn,

Interesting question, I’ll give it some thought. You are probably right, given human nature, power is often preferred over principle.

  5. Actually the Presbyterians split during the War Between the States and re-united in the 1980s. Some factions spun off because … well, because they were humans. The re-united denomination is the PCUSA. PCA churches are the Southern churches that didn’t want to rejoin. I don’t know what ARP churches are but they are very conservative — no women preachers or deacons, etc. The Cumberland Presbyterians split off long, long ago when they were so remote in the frontiers of Tennessee that they couldn’t get ordained ministers to give communion and the church wouldn’t allow them to use elders or others, so the Cumberlands split. I always found that interesting. To my knowledge they haven’t re-joined with anyone.
