Nostalgia
Took The Little Bean, age four, to the local high school football game tonight, between the public high school (1-4 going in) and the Jesuit high school (4-1 going in). I saw a public HS twit with the following legend magic-markered (I guess it would be “Sharpied” nowadays) on his shirt: “We don’t need Jesus to win.”
I don’t think Jesus, or Jesuit’s star running back, liked that at all. Jesuit walloped the public school 42-zip.

If your record is 1-4 going in, I’d think they’d take whatever they could get to win.
Glad the Jesuit school pounded ‘em. :)

Right on. I thought that was a double-jackass move in light of their record.

As soon as I read “little bean,” I knew this would be good. Go Anwyn.

I was working at the game, and I had a brief conversation with some of our students (I work at the public school) about “staying classy” while we root for our team. I have had little luck on this front. Most of the schools in this area take for granted that taunting is part of cheering, no matter what the staff say.
Bringing religion into the mix was beyond the pale, though. I wish I had seen the shirt.
By the way, nice to find a local blogger. I came via rachellucas in Texas, so I found it a bit ironic to see you posting about MY Friday night game. Small world, eh?

Hi Dennis, that is funny indeed–several Oregonians have come in from Rachel’s, but not one *quite* so close to home as to actually have been at that game, much less working at the school. Welcome!
I used to teach high school myself (choir). I had to laugh at the loudspeaker pregame music because it was music from *my* HS years … . o O (“Is this Enter Sandman?? Really?“) I had no bias for either team going in … but after the first few plays I saw which way the wind was blowing. And the kid with the shirt, well, it was just too much “asking for it” not to take notice.
