Do You See the Scarlet Letter?

Or, The Vagaries of Computer Behavior.

This site has a favicon–a little icon that appears in the address bar in place of the proprietary “e” for Internet Explorer or the little symbol Firefox uses. It also appears next to the name of the site in your “Favorites” list, if it’s in your favorites list. It’s a miniature red “A” from the “Anwyn’s” part of the site name.

Only trouble is, my IE is refusing to display it. I briefly had IE7 installed, but it farked up my music players, so it was taken back down to IE6.*. And now, no favicon. Firefox still shows it. Frankly, I’m not sure IE ever had it–can’t remember. The question is: Do you see it? And what browser/version are you using?

  1. I am using IE 6. I have ur site saved to my favorite list. The icon only shows in the favorite list.

  2. Thanks, Ouabam. I deleted and re-added the site to my favorites list last night and the icon showed up this morning.

  3. Apparently you can “shake” the icon a little bit in IE 6 to make it show up. (Or just add it to your favorites as you discovered).

    FYI: I can see the Scarlet Letter. “Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv: Gecko/20070219 Firefox/”

    What do I win?! :-D

  4. My gratitude? ;) And also a chuckle over the fact that Steve Jobs’s comments about teachers’ unions lately make me more inclined to buy a Mac next time I need a laptop.

  5. Bizarrely, it’s disappeared from the Favorites list again. I tried the “shake”–no result yet. Ah well. I’ll tinker with it. :)

  6. Scarlet letter is present and accounted-for in IE7 (in three places: favorites, address bar and tab).
