Funny how the little ones keep you honest…many times I’ve shied away from using an overly judgmental term around my kids…and other times, like in a recent discussion of Hamas, I think “yeah, evil is exactly the right word.”

Because I’m not trying to teach them to be judgmental, but I am trying to teach them good judgement.

I think only you and one other person in America use the phrase “decent people” because it’s so, um, it’s so, um. I’d say “judgmental” but probably the real word is “un-cool.” If that’s a word.

As the phrases and wordings evaporate, so do the concepts behind them. When I told my daughter, “That isn’t done,” she doesn’t understand and I wonder where I failed. I didn’t want her to grow up to be a snob, and think I took her the other way. There are standards. And “decent” is a good one.
