I have been a Beatles fan since I was a kid and can hardly listen to them objectively anymore, but Abbey Road is as great a piece of art as you'll find in the 20th Century. The White Album is also a giant pistache of varied and diverse styles and songs and very enjoyable. Let It Be is a little uneven, and some of the "best" songs are saccharine and stilted (McCartney blames it on Phil Spector, but Long and Winding Road and Let It Be are pretty pretentious, with or without the strings and vocal chorus). Revolver and Rubber Soul are what the entire alternative guitar group New Wave was based upon. Really great stuff there, And Your Bird Can Sing, Drive My Car, If I Needed Someone, You Won't See Me. If You've never heard the songs I've mentioned, I have to guess you really haven't investigated the Beatles much. Do yourself a favor, its not all hype, they truly have something no other band has ever tapped, and energy and orginality and freshness that holds up 40 years later. I always thought Sgt. Taxman is, and I used to like Yesterday when I was in high school. I just don't get the undying adoration, is all. I guess when you're "first" at anything it makes you the colossus for all time, but I don't consider there was anything genius in their work--"catchy" describes it as well as anything else, to me.
