Yeah, what is the deal with Chicago having 2 teams, anyway? I'm a Tampa area resident, right before we got the Devil Rays (now changed to the Rays, removing the Satanic references only this year, I kid you not- Im sure they'll get better now!) when some 11th hour shenanigans by Illinois' governor setting the clock back so lawmakers would have more time to pass a bill for a new stadium and the owners ha to renege on a deal to move to Tampa- big deal here at the time, much knashing of teeth and paranoia about a plot to keep Tampa Bay from betting a team- well, we did get one and it seems the plotters were right all along.
Not that getting the White Sox would have been any better.

docweasel,

If I'm not mistaken (its entirely possible I am, since I don't know her personally and have only read the blog for about 6 months), Anwyn is from the great state of Indiana, where we are blessed with an agonizingly teasing NBA team, a finally-out-of-the-doldrums NFL powerhouse, some pretty decent college football (excepting this year) and basketball teams, but no MLB team. Thus, most of us latch onto either the Cubs or Reds (no self-respecting person should ever be caught admitting to White Sox fandom), depending on geography.

So, the Bulls run only served to quash the best chance we had at an NBA title by knocking the Pacers off in a number of very good playoff series.

Oh and to this Sunday's game -- I'm very nervous but very excited to watch. I think we've got a chance if we can keep the Pats from scoring on their 1st drive. In the past we've been able to out-offense them with just a few defensive stops. I'm not so confident in that tactic this year (Randy Moss is completely sick in that offense)

FWIW:

Peyton Manning > Tom Brady (but not by a huge margin)

Colts running game > Pats running game (injuries, Tom Brady's laughable denial of going after the passing TD record)

Pats receivers > Colts receivers (by a fair margin with Harrison injured)

Pats defense > Colts defense (could go either way, depending on who has the early lead)

This should be a fun game to watch. I'd give the Pats the edge in this one, but Indy has surprised me a few times this year. Hope they do it again.

John:
Heh, we DID for a while! They started out as the Cleveland Rams, believe it or not! Anyway, you guys did have some pretty great seasons a few years back.

Still, you can't top Cleveland fans for futility:

And that's not even mentioning last week's Indian's loss of ALCS, after being up 3 games to 1, then losing 3 in a row!

Sure, the Cubs haven't won in a championship in a long time, but you have had your 6 Bulls championships in 8 years not long ago, and the Bears had their superbowl.

The last major sport championship in Cleveland was a combined 115 seasons (baseball, football and basketball) ago, in 1964, before there were superbowls (Cleveland is one of the 3 active teams who has never appeared in, much less won, a Superbowl) when the Browns beat the heavily favored Colts.

Also, its not like the Cubs have come close many times and choked or screwed up, like Cleveland teams have. We are still stinging from Jose Mesa, up 2 runs with one out in the 9th inning of the 7th game of the '97 World Series vs. the Marlins, giving up 2 runs and the Indians going on to lose in 11 innings.

We have 3 losses in 4 years in the AFC title game, all vs. Elway and the Broncos, with "The Drive", "The Fumble" and "The Blowout". Not to mention "Red Right 88", when Browns coach Sam Rutigliano, with the Browns down 2 to the Raiders on the 13 in the 1980 AFC Title game, goes for the touchdown instead of the field goal (the field was icy and Cochraft has already missed 2 that game) leading to an interception and the end of the game.

Basketball we also have our near misses, with a young Michael Jordan's "The Shot" over Craig Ehlo's head to beat the buzzer and beat the Cavs- he did the same thing with "The Shot II" the next time the 2 teams met.

So don't give me that Cubs sobstory sister! You don't know what its like to be born and raised in N.E. Ohio and doomed to a life of rooting for Cleveland teams. Heck, our Browns left town for Baltimore THEN won a Superbowl, for cripe's sake! How bad is that?

We did get to keep the Brown's colors, name and records, in an unprecedented deal no other city has ever received, just to make sure we hold onto our record for futility.

Nice Hat! And for the record, you’re quite an attractive lady. As a somewhat relative side note (wrt other comments about your hat), worse sunburn I’ve ever had was in Oregon (which is saying a lot as a Floridian) ‘Twas on a TDY (Temporary Duty) down at Klamath Falls (Oregon ANG). Back then they had old ADF (Air Defense Fighter) A model F-16s (Old version, built in the early 80s). Spent a couple of weeks flying with ‘em, and over the weekend decided to go visit Crater Lake. Had a great time, but didn’t (foolishly) wear a hat and burned the top of my skull like you wouldn’t believe! Will probably die of cancer one day because of it. Could barely put my helmet on that Monday, and by Tuesday was pealing so bad I looked like I had the mange or something. Morale of the story: WEAR A HAT in Oregon! Or at least don’t go bald like I did back in my 30s… :+)

Cheers,
