		<description>Keep in mind, right now Merkley isn&#039;t running against Gordon Smith.  He&#039;s running against far-left activist Steve Novick for the nomination, and Novick has the full support of the extreme liberal central-PDX crowd.

Merkley will probably win the nomination, but if he wants to have money left over after the primary and if he wants to avoid fracturing the left (the way Dobson threatens to fracture the conservatives), he needs to play left-field in the primary before moving to the center for the general.</description>
